Why Tuscany is Worth the Hype: Exploring Siena & San Gimignano
Tuscany is a region that lives up to its reputation, with rolling hills, historic towns, and mouthwatering cuisine. Our latest adventure took us to the medieval gems of Siena and San Gimignano, where history, culture, and stunning views abound. Join us as we explore these two beautiful towns and discover why Tuscany is truly worth the hype.
A Day in Siena: History and Charm
Our day began in the heart of Siena, a medieval town that’s famous for its well-preserved buildings and rich history. We started with a quick snack – a slice of delicious pizza to fuel us for the day ahead. But Siena isn’t just about food; it’s about stepping back in time.
We made our way to Piazza del Campo, Siena’s main square and the heart of the town. Surrounded by historic buildings, this piazza is a testament to Siena’s medieval past. The Torre del Mangia tower looms above, a reminder of the town’s rich history dating back to the 1300s. The square itself has been a marketplace since the 12th century, and it’s easy to feel the weight of history as you stroll through.
After taking in the sights, we headed to the Duomo di Siena, one of the most stunning cathedrals we’ve ever seen. The intricate facade, with its blend of green, white, and pink marble, is simply breathtaking. Inside, the opulence continues with magnificent frescoes, sculptures, and artwork that left us in awe. For a small fee, it’s well worth a visit, and you can even skip the line by booking your tickets online in advance.
San Gimignano: Towers and Tranquillity
From Siena, we travelled to San Gimignano, a town known for its iconic towers. Once home to 70 towers, only 14 remain, but they still dominate the skyline and give the town its unique character. As we walked through the narrow streets, we couldn’t help but admire the medieval architecture and the sense of history that permeates every corner.
San Gimignano is not just about its towers; it’s also famous for its Vernaccia white wine and world-class gelato. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at a restaurant with breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside. The pasta, paired with local ingredients like gorgonzola and walnut, was a culinary highlight. But the best was yet to come – dessert.
World-Class Gelato
No visit to San Gimignano is complete without trying gelato from the award-winning gelateria that has been named the world’s best more than once. The flavours are unique and refined, with combinations like saffron with pine nuts and pistachio that blew us away. The line can be long during the day, but trust us, it’s worth the wait!
Final Thoughts
As we left San Gimignano and headed back to our car, we couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of Tuscany. From the medieval charm of Siena to the tranquil streets of San Gimignano, this region has a timeless appeal that captivates the heart. Whether you’re exploring historic towns, enjoying world-class cuisine, or simply soaking in the views, Tuscany is a destination that never disappoints.
