Our 48-Hour Guide to Ubud, Bali
Discovering Ubud, Bali: A 48-Hour Guide - Local Food, Waterfalls & Temples
Nestled in the heart of Bali, Ubud is often considered the cultural capital of the island and one of its most picturesque regions. Whether you're drawn by the lush rice fields, the rich history, or the serene temples, Ubud offers something for every traveller. After spending over six months in Bali, with numerous visits to Ubud, we've put together this ultimate 48-hour guide to help you make the most of your time in this magical place.
Day 1: Immersing in Ubud’s Natural Beauty
Morning: Rice Field Walk Start your day with a peaceful walk through Ubud’s less-travelled rice fields. We opted for a quieter trail, away from the crowds, and it felt like we had the entire path to ourselves. The walk, about 2 km long (just over a mile), offers stunning views of the green rice paddies and occasional encounters with local farmers and ducks, which help keep the fields pest-free. If you’re planning a visit, the best times to see the fields in their full glory are around August-September or mid-December to January.
Afternoon: Relaxation by the Pool After your walk, unwind by the pool at your hotel. Ubud is known for its infinity pools with breathtaking views of the jungle. Some of our favourite pool clubs include Jungle Fish, Sayan House, and Hanging Gardens. If you have some extra time, consider visiting one of these spots for a luxurious yet tranquil afternoon.
Evening: Sunset at Sayan Point As the day draws to a close, head to Sayan Point Restaurant for one of the most spectacular views in Ubud. While the sunsets may not rival those on the beach, the panoramic view from Sayan Point is nothing short of incredible. The restaurant offers a relaxed vibe with no minimum spend, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail and soak in the scenery. We were lucky to catch a clear sky, which is rare in Ubud, and it made the experience even more magical.
Night: Indulging in Local Desserts End your evening with a sweet treat from Mr. Kebab Martabak, a popular local spot. We tried their signature martabak, a delicious pancake filled with toppings like Nutella, peanuts, and banana. It’s indulgent and rich, thanks to the generous layer of margarine, but it’s a must-try for any foodie!
Day 2: Exploring Ubud’s Waterfalls and Temples
Morning: Waterfall Adventure Day two kicks off with a visit to one of Ubud’s stunning waterfalls. If you’re willing to drive about 90 minutes from the town centre, you’ll find plenty of options to explore. We visited one that required a short hike from the parking area, but the effort was well worth it. The waterfall was breathtaking, and despite being a popular spot, it still felt like a hidden gem. If you arrive early—around 7 or 8 AM—you can enjoy the waterfall with fewer crowds and a more serene atmosphere.
Afternoon: Temples of Ubud After returning to the hotel for lunch, head out to explore Ubud’s historic temples. Start with Pura Dalem Ubud, a temple associated with the underworld and known for its eerie statues, including the demon Rangda holding a baby. The temple closes at 5 PM, so plan accordingly.
Next, visit the Saraswati Temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess of knowledge. The lotus ponds and intricate Balinese architecture here are absolutely mesmerising. Right across the street, you’ll find Ubud Palace, once home to the royal family. The best part? Entry is free, making it a budget-friendly way to soak in some history and culture.
Evening: Ubud Market Finish your day with a visit to Ubud Market. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or simply want to explore, the market is a vibrant hub of activity and a great place to experience local life. From handcrafted goods to unique Balinese trinkets, there’s something for everyone here.
