Venice: Where to Eat, Top Attractions & Secret Spots!

Venice, the city of canals, is a dream destination for many, but with its popularity comes the challenge of navigating through crowds and finding those truly special places that make your trip unforgettable. In our latest vlog, we’re uncovering the hidden gems, must-see attractions, and top dining spots in Venice to help you make the most of your visit.

From quiet corners in Castello to iconic landmarks like Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square, here’s your ultimate guide to exploring Venice like a local.

Morning Coffee in Castello: Start your day right with a visit to the charming district of Castello. We found a hidden gem for our morning coffee – a quaint spot tucked away from the tourist buzz, offering a serene atmosphere with just the two of us and a view of the peaceful alleyways. This area is perfect for soaking up local life, with its beautiful architecture and fewer crowds compared to central Venice. Whether you’re craving a traditional espresso or joining the locals with an early spritz, Castello is the ideal place to begin your Venetian adventure.

Exploring Castello: As we wandered through Castello, we were struck by the tranquillity and beauty of the area. Unlike the bustling San Marco, Castello offers airy streets, fragrant jasmine-scented parks, and stunning architecture that transports you back in time. The Basilica di San Pietro di Castello is a highlight – an impressive yet serene spot that’s perfect for history lovers and those seeking a quieter side of Venice.

Cicchetti at La Barrique: No visit to Venice is complete without indulging in cicchetti, the Venetian version of tapas. We stopped at La Barrique, a wine bar in Castello, where we enjoyed a selection of these delicious bites. From gorgonzola to salami-topped treats, each cicchetto offered a burst of flavour. Paired with a cold Italian beer or a glass of wine, this is the perfect way to experience local cuisine while people-watching in a picturesque square.

Iconic Rialto Bridge: Of course, no trip to Venice would be complete without visiting the iconic Rialto Bridge. While it’s one of the most crowded spots in the city, it’s worth braving the crowds for the stunning views of the Grand Canal. We recommend visiting later in the evening when the crowds thin out, and the bridge is beautifully lit—a magical sight you won’t want to miss.

Santa Maria della Salute & Dorsoduro: Our next stop was the breathtaking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, built in the 1600s as a symbol of Venice’s triumph over the plague. This stunning church is located at the tip of Dorsoduro, offering incredible views of Venice from its waterfront location. Nearby, we enjoyed drinks at Cantina del Vino già Schiavi, a popular spot where locals gather for aperitifs. The cicchetti here were unique and creative, making it a must-visit for foodies.

Dining at Osteria ai Artisti: For dinner, we headed to Osteria ai Artisti, where the food lived up to our high expectations. The pasta was fresh, the atmosphere was cozy, and the service was top-notch. It’s a great spot to wind down after a day of exploring, offering a taste of authentic Venetian cuisine in a relaxed setting.

Discovering San Marco: No trip to Venice is complete without visiting Piazza San Marco. From the opulent Basilica di San Marco to the towering Campanile, this square is a feast for the eyes. While it’s often crowded, it’s worth taking the time to explore and marvel at the grandeur of Venice’s most famous landmarks. Keep an eye on your belongings, though, as pickpockets can be a problem in such busy areas.

Thrifting & Local Finds: For those who love shopping, Venice offers some unique thrift stores and local boutiques. We explored the area around Rialto Bridge, discovering vintage gems and cool fashion finds at reasonable prices. Whether you’re looking for a statement piece or a souvenir, Venice’s thrift shops have something for everyone.

Aperitivo & Dinner at Ristorante da Ivo: As the sun set, we indulged in an aperitivo at Bar Dandolo, enjoying a Spritz and soaking up the quintessential Venetian vibe. For dinner, we splurged at the famous Ristorante da Ivo, a favorite among celebrities. The food was exquisite, and the setting—complete with a private dock for arrivals by gondola—was nothing short of magical. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, this is the place to be.
